Pharmaceutical Teaching Laboratory Center Center

The Pharmaceutical Teaching Laboratory Center (PTLC) was founded in 2006 based on the Chemical Experiment Teaching Center (1999) and the Pharmaceutical Experimental Teaching Center (2003). The PTLC is an institute led by the PUHSC and the SPS. It was supported by the MOE 21st Century Higher Education Reform Project financed by World Bank loans and was bestowed with the title of “Qualified Laboratory” by the Beijing Education Bureau. The PTLC was recognized as a “Beijing Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center” in 2007 and as an “Excellent Laboratory of PKU” in 2010. In 2012, the center was named “National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center” during the Twelfth Five-Year Plan period. Recently, the PTLC has built a network platform of experiment teaching, facilities and laboratory information administration to better the use of teaching resources.

The center strictly follows the requirement of green chemistry and biological safety, and meets the national standards on laboratory environment, safety and environmental protection. Teaching laboratories are divided by their functions, such as chemical synthesis of medicinal compounds, pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical analysis, molecular and cellular pharmacology, medicinal plants, pharmaceutical calculating and comprehensive laboratory. All the teaching resources are managed and shared in a centralized way.

The center has formed a teaching, technical and administrating team consisting of academic leaders, professors, associate professors, experiment teachers, technicians and teaching assistants. It undertakes all the experimental teachings for students of different majors and levels in the PUHSC. The center offers 36 courses to students majoring in pharmaceutics, preclinical medicine, clinical medicine, dentistry, preventive medicine, and nursing. The number of experimental items is about 300, which include basic chemistry, biological chemistry, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical analysis, pharmaceutics, pharmacology, natural medicinal chemistry, pharmacognosy, medicinal plants, modern biological technology, computer-assisted drug design and so on. Each year, more than 4000 students are trained in the PTLC with a total of about 310,000 lab hours.

The PTLC is reforming experimental teaching modes and curriculum systems to better adapt to the training of pharmaceutical research personnel. It seeks to provide individualized training, upholding the principle of imparting knowledge, enhancing ability, improving quality and balancing development. It is aimed at improving students' innovation and basic skills of experiment and operational procedures. With over a decade of hard work, the center has fundamentally transformed the conventional concept of experiment teaching and learning, and built a brand-new experiment teaching mode, curriculum system and operational mechanism. The PTLC has played an important role in medical training and social services.
